May 30, 2024 | Proclamation of Commendation and Appreciation of Captain Tom Cramblett for Meritorious Service to the Port of Cascade Locks
WHEREAS, Captain Tom Cramblett has served aboard the Sternwheeler Columbia Gorge since her maiden voyage on October 29, 1983 as a deckhand, engineer, and ultimately as Captain; and has shared his knowledge of the Columbia River with many captains in training during the course of his career; and
WHEREAS, Captain Tom Cramblett led his crew members George Torres and Steven Hammrich through emergency actions to rescue the Sternwheeler when she broke free of her moorings during the blizzard of January 13, 2024, saving both the Sternwheeler and the Thunder Island Pedestrian Bridge with their brave actions; and
WHEREAS, Captain Tom Cramblett has served the Port of Cascade Locks and the Cascade Locks community tirelessly throughout his career and has become a beloved symbol of warm-heartedness and welcoming to Cascade Locks residents and visitors from around the world and a noted expert on Columbia River Gorge history including the Lewis & Clark expedition; and
WHEREAS, Captain Tom Cramblett has generously served the Cascade Locks community in a myriad of volunteer roles including Mayor, Santa, Lions Club President, Boy Scout Leader, reading to children at the Cascade Locks Elementary School, and many others; and
WHEREAS, Captain Tom Cramblett has earned the respect and gratitude of the general public through his service as Captain and his continued Marine Park groundskeeping work, has been the recipient of numerous accolades, and continues to reflect community pride for Cascade Locks; and
WHEREAS, Captain Tom Cramblett has helped the Port of Cascade Locks achieve its mission through his exemplary meritorious service and commitment to his profession;
NOW, THEREFORE, on this 30th day of May 2024, the Board of Commissioners does hereby proclaim that May 30 shall heretofore be known as
CAPTAIN TOM DAY
in the Port District.
